Looking for fun ways to enjoy the outdoors with your furry friend? Charlottesville and the surrounding areas offer plenty of dog-friendly spots where your pup can run, play, and even splash in the water. Here are four of my favorite spots to spend an afternoon with my pup.

1. Rivanna Trail

Location: Charlottesville, VA

Highlights: This scenic trail system follows the Rivanna River, weaving through wooded areas and offering beautiful river views. Along the trail, you’ll find several spots where dogs can safely splash and cool off in shallow water.

Distance/Difficulty: Varies by loop; easy to moderate.

Tips: Dogs must be on a leash for the majority of the trail, but river access makes it perfect for hot summer days. There is a small section that offers off of the trail that permits dogs to be off-leash on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays. Don’t forget to bring fresh water for your pup.

2. Biscuit Run Park – Off-Leash Areas

Location: Biscuit Run Park, Charlottesville, VA

Highlights: Biscuit Run is perfect for energetic pups! It features dedicated off-leash areas where dogs can run freely, play fetch, and socialize. Trails around the park are also great for on-leash hikes, and some areas along the river give pups a chance to splash around.

Distance/Difficulty: 3–5 mile loops; moderate.

Tips: Keep off-leash dogs under voice control, and always clean up after your pet. Check seasonal restrictions before you visit.

3. Preddy Creek Dog Park

Location: Albemarle County, VA

Highlights: A fully off-leash dog park with separate areas for small and large dogs, Preddy Creek is perfect for social pups who love to play. Open spaces, benches, and shaded areas make it enjoyable for both dogs and owners.

Distance/Difficulty: Walking paths inside the park are short; easy.

Tips: Bring plenty of fresh water as your furry friend is sure to get their exercise in here!

4. Chris Greene Lake Park – Dog-Friendly Trails

Location: Charlottesville, VA

Highlights: Chris Greene Lake Park offers scenic trails and lake access for dogs to swim, making it a favorite for active pups. Open spaces and water views create a relaxing and fun experience for both you and your dog.

Distance/Difficulty: 2–4 mile loops; easy to moderate.

Tips: Dogs must be leashed on trails, but supervised lake access is allowed. Bring towels, fresh water, and a toy or two for extra fun.

Before heading out, make sure to review trail rules to confirm dogs are welcome and find any designated off-leash areas. And always check your pup for ticks after every outdoor adventure!
