If you’re a hiking enthusiast in the Charlottesville area, you're in for a treat! With the Blue Ridge Mountains as a backdrop, this region offers a variety of trails with stunning views, wildlife, and natural beauty. Here are four must-visit hikes that will take you through scenic forests, past waterfalls, and along breathtaking ridgelines.
Humpback Rock Trail
This favorite hike of mine for two main reasons: it can be done relatively quickly if taking the steep ascent, and it offers breathtaking views of the Shenandoah Valley. The steeper trail is only about a mile in length one-way but it’s challenging terrain and elevation gain of nearly 700 feet make it challenging. Luckily, the trail also offers a 4.3 mile long loop with a much more moderate ascent. The trail is also dog-friendly, making it a perfect option for those looking to spend the day with their four-legged friends.
Location: Blue Ridge Parkway, Milepost 5.8, 15 miles north of Charlottesville
Distance: 2 miles (out and back) or 4.3 mile loop
Difficulty: Moderate to Difficult
Monticello Trail
If rocky terrain and switchbacks aren’t for you, Monticello Trail offers a wonderful reprieve while still offering beautiful terrain and diverse wildlife. The historical trail takes you around the grounds of Monticello, Thomas Jefferson’s estate. It’s a mix of beautiful woods and historical sites, with views of Jefferson’s iconic home and gardens. The trail is well-maintained and often accessible year-round, perfect for a late afternoon walk or for those that want to experience a hike with young kids.
Location: Thomas Jefferson’s Monticello, Charlottesville, VA
Distance: 2.5 miles (loop)
Difficulty: Easy to Moderate
Sugar Hollow Reservoir: The Blue Hole Hike
Looking for a way to cool off after a warm summer hike? Look no further than a hike from Sugar Hollow to the Blue Hole, a beloved swimming spot by locals. The Blue Hole is about 1.5 miles from the parking lot, making the 3 mile out-and-back a perfect option for those looking for a moderately challenging hike. The trail includes several stream crossings, so be prepared even if you don’t plan on swimming. Once again, this trail is dog-friendly, so pack your pups and some snacks for this scenic adventure.
Location: Shenandoah National Park, approximately 35 minutes from downtown Charlottesville, located off Skyline Drive at the Brown Mountain Overlook
Distance: 3 miles (out and back)
Difficulty: Moderate
Biscuit Run
Tucked just south of Charlottesville, Biscuit Run Trail offers a peaceful escape into nature, only a short drive from the city. This 4.7-mile loop winds through lush forests, along ridgelines, and over rolling hills. The trail features scenic views, stream crossings, and a serene atmosphere, making it perfect for a moderate hike. Whether you're a local looking to explore or a visitor seeking a quieter trail, Biscuit Run provides a beautiful, off-the-beaten-path adventure.
Location: Biscuit Run State Park, located south of Charlottesville, just off Route 20 (Broadus Wood Road)
Distance: 4.7 miles (loop)
Difficulty: Moderate
